Glamourous in Green

It’s so easy to simply ignore the warnings, ignore the impending doom looming over us like a cloud threatening rain. After all, I’ll probably be dead by the time any of this starts to catch up to us. And while that may seem overly selfish and conceited, don’t try to pretend it’s not the same for anyone.

Why should I sacrifice my comfort for the good of humanity?

Lipsticks made of whale fat, mascara made safe by sacrificing small rodents, chemicals contributing to the buildup of gases in our atmosphere, all so glamourous, all so easy to consume on a daily basis. Or is it?

As it turns out, it is just as easy to use environmentally sustainable beauty products.

Physicians Formula has an amazing line of completely organic biodegradable makeup. Tinted moisturizers, pressed powder, mascara, eyeliner, you name it. It is a little on the pricey side, but no more than you’d pay for good makeup. Also, it feels better on your skin. The benefits go way beyond simply being an eco-warrior.

Okay, okay... it's time to face it.

Accumulating stuff is a problem I often associate with people who lived in through the depression and are currently fond of bingo, walkers, and fake pastel flowers. That is, until I look into my closets. Or drawers. Or- you get it. I often dispel my guilt by taking everything worn and discarded to a used clothing store or a charity. That is, until I started working for a charity, and realized how much of the stuff donated can't be used and just gets thrown away. If I won't wear that shirt because it has a stain on it, why would someone else want to?

I've also absolved my guilt at buying items bundled into plastic packaging by dumping pretty must all of my non-compostable refuse into blue bags and hoping someone else will sort it out. That is, until I was forced to admit that most common plastics are non-recylable (or recylable, but at an expense that most municipalities in Canada have yet to justify) and that everything I think I'm recyling is getting thrown away anway. Ain't knowledge a pain?

The point is, I've been passing my share of the blame along. If I'm not adequately disposing of the run-off from my consumption, I may as well be driving it to the landfill myself. Essentially, I need to find a better way of recyling or reusing my older, non-fabulous stuff and the excess that comes along with disposable society. And a good start? Fabulously green?

Being oh-so fabulous ourselves, we can't help but be drawn to fabulous things. We thrive in environments that are lush and elegant. We are stimulated and inspired by fine things. But as the world's awareness of environmental concerns grows, and our concern grows with it, we can't help but be conflicted. How are we to stay fabulous, and continue to live fabulously, while making the transition to becoming thoroughly green? We want it all. And this blog is about how we're going to get it.

Going green takes committment, but this doesn't always mean sacrificing living well for living sustainability. Not everything is a trade-off. We intend to test this theory: going green while maintaining our abilities to live our lives exceedingly fabulously. We just don't want others to sacrifice where we weren't willing to.
